When Plague is mentioned, we think of rodents, but FLEAS are responsible for spreading this terrible disease.
There are over 2000 species of these wingless insects, and they are equipped with bristles sensitive to heat and vibration that enable them to locate a passing host. A flea can jump over 200 times its own body length, making it one of the best jumpers of all known animals. Energy, not muscles, create this springing power.
The flea's tough body enables it to withstand great pressure , and as you've probably found out, it is hard to kill one by pressing it with your fingers.
If it is any consolation, these parasites have smaller parasites that prey on them.
If you feel your pet may be infected with fleas, be sure to a bath them with a flea shampoo, or contact your vet for advice on how to treat.
Horses are not usually affcected by fleas.
